Andrea McMillan

I am a stitched textile artist working with fabric and thread. My pieces feature extensive free-machine stitching which puts detail, dimension and texture onto commercial or hand-dyed fabric. Technically they are small quilts as they consist of three or more layers of material, including wadding, held together by stitches. Most of my work is unframed but fitted with a hanging sleeve so everything can be displayed on the wall. This shows off the full benefit of a textile piece.

I work a lot from photos which I take myself, although I do occasionally use the internet as a research tool.

I have completed City & Guilds Patchwork and Quilting Parts one and two, as well as the Machine Embroidery Short Course.

My piece "Falkland Hill" was a prize winner at the 2015 Fife Art Competition, as was "Hopetoun Monument" in 2018. "Pittenweem Lighthouse" was Highly Commended at the online event in 2020.

My Little Treasures series features museum inspired gold pieces, mounted on canvas for easier hanging.

I love colour and admire the work of abstract painters like Kandinsky and Mondrian, and the Art Nouveau artists Gaudi and Klimt. While much of my work is still based on nature, I am building up a series of pieces inspired by these great artists.

I am a member of Open Studios North Fife, but due to Covid-19, everything has been put on hold - we are hoping to have an event in October 2021. If you want to see what I have been doing during lockdown, the page Lockdown Art will tell you about my "Travel without leaving home" and "Views from Home" series.

More of my work can be seen on my Facebook page:
